Eight Values

In particular, I feel very strongly that the Protection of Dissent voices is the most important of the 8 values. It has been shown through history that drowning out those who stand against government authority leads to authoritarian behaviors. In places like russian and north korea, people are actively criminalized and even directly made an example of if they dare speak ill of their leaders. It is our duty as American citizens to call out when the people in power are using that power to hurt those beneath them, and it's important to understand that the United States is not and never will be immune to corruption. The very idea of democracy is based on the tenet that the power of the government comes directly and only from the consent of the governed, and when the people speak up against the government, they are making the fact that they did not consent to what is happening known, and they uphold the ideals of democracy all on their own.

The value that feels most personal to me is the idea of The Market Place of ideas. I have personally always prided myself on the fact that I can stand by my ideas no matter what, even when other people are trying to put me down. The fact that it is written in law that my ideas are protected, because they contribute to the greater whole of American individualism, makes me very proud. The Marketplace of Ideas is what allows me as a creative person to express what I believe in through my work, and it's what ensures that my word has a place alongside everyone else.

Stable Change is the value that I see practiced the most today. For nearly the entirety of American history, there has been a population of people living here that are dissatisfied with the status quo. This is naturally for an community of people, discontent fuels change, and being able to express that discontent is necessary. There are a lot of very frustrated and disillusioned Americans speaking out about what they feel has gone wrong in this country, and that is very important. By speaking out, the rest of the world is clued in on what's going wrong in America, and when something is going wrong in America, that affects the entire world.

There are a lot of things that can be connected to the ideas presented in the 8 Values, but one of the most interesting things to compare it to is the internet as a whole. The internet could be seen as perhaps the ultimate example of the marketplace of ideas. There are millions of people and opinions circulating on the internet nearly all the time, and there is very little that can be done to silence or even restrict them from sharing whatever it is they believe in. It is also a very good way of showing Stable Change. People complain a lot on the internet, perhaps annoyingly so, but it is through this constant storm of negativity that you can get a very good idea of what sorts of things all kinds of people are getting mad at.
